Newt Gingrich Favorability/Unfavorability Nationally

Do I think that Newt would make a better president than Romney? Yes. Do I think that he would be a better debater against Obama? Yes. Do I worry that Newt may have huge negatives that will be hard to overcome? Yes. Can a strong campaign undo some of those negatives? Sure, but I am just not sure how much can be undone with these abilities.

UPDATE: So if the above is true, why are some Democrats so scared of Newt?

Pelosi: Let me just say this. That will never happen.

King: Why?

Pelosi: He's not going to be President of the United States. . .

King: Why are you so sure?

Pelosi: There is something that I know. . . .

I just heard from a moderator on NBC after the debate that Romney had significant investments tied to Freddie Mac. Romney's on the offensive, and his ship is sinking. Newt's baggage is really old baggage, with nothing new. Everyone is already aware of his faults, and his numbers keep growing. Go Newt!!

John, Newt has a past record of compromise on gun rights matters. Should that be a concern for gun owners? www.gunrightsinamerica.com Thanks.

Dear " GunRightsInAmerica.com":
I know Newt, and I think that Ron Paul's and others attacks on Newt's gun record are dishonest. I trust Newt on this issue.

I hope that is the case with Newt, but I have my doubts. I think there is sufficient reason to have some questions about his record, according to Gun Owners of America's claim on their site:

Prior to the “Republican Revolution” of 1994, Rep. Newt Gingrich of Georgia had earned an A rating with Gun Owners of America. But that all changed in 1995, after Republicans were swept to power and Gingrich became Speaker of the House.

The Republicans gained the majority, thanks in large part to gun owners outraged by the Clinton gun ban. And upon taking the reins of the House, Speaker Gingrich said famously that, “As long as I am Speaker of this House, no gun control legislation is going to move in committee or on the floor of this House and there will be no further erosion of their rights.”

His promise didn’t hold up, however, and his GOA rating quickly dropped like a lead sinker to a “D.” In 1996, the Republican-led Congress passed the “gun free school zones act,” creating criminal safe zones like Virginia Tech, where the only person armed was a murderous criminal. Speaker Newt Gingrich voted for the bill containing this ban."

Dear GunRightsInAmerica.com:
Your claims here are simply bizarre. Like Newt or not, it is wrong to say that he did wrong by gun owners during his speakership. The only gun control bill that went through during this time was the safe school zone act and that was supported by 90+ percent of members of both parties. There was no way that could have been stopped. There was no intellectual ammunition or debate on that issue at that time. Since then Newt has been among those who have helped educate people on the issue. Look at his public statements after the VT attack. Name me on other politician in the Republican race other than Perry who has spoken out as clearly on this issue.
